As A Man Thinketh
As a Man Thinketh, is a short and simple book which does not take long at all to read. This book can be completed in a day and has valuable advice that can change the trajectory of your life. The language used is very simple and the ideas projected focus around the idea that your thought's have power which define the trajectory of your life. Ideas that I found to be the main points of this book are:
- Your actions are a consequence of your thoughts, therefore what you think controls what you do & what you become/ achieve
- You shape the world that you live in through your thoughts as much as the world around you shapes your life
My main learning/focus areas from the books are listed below:
Chapter 1: Character
This chapter discusses how our thoughts determine our actions through unconscious thoughts. By dwelling on good thoughts we have a character that is more noble rather than the opposite of bitterness, petty and unkind.
Chapter 2: Circumstances
The outer conditions of our life is a reflection of the inner state. Of course not entirely responsible for our outer state as their are other factors that come into play such as other people's actions. However, our thoughts can be closely tied to our circumstances in life. Furthermore, even if events and situations are not in our control we still have the power to respond in a certain way such as positively rather than negatively. You become the master of your fate as soon as you take control of your inner self. Your wishes come true when they are in harmony with your thoughts and actions.
Chapter 3: Health
Our health and appearance is shaped by our thoughts.
- Negative thoughts can lead the body to disorder, disease and decline
- Positive thoughts can lead the body to be energized, relaxed and rejuvenated
For instance, two individuals who are the same can have thoughts which lead them into two different paths.
- A positive individual: will eat the correct food, drink plenty of water and stay productive which will lead to a healthy and long life
- A negative individual: will most likely be less mindful of these aspect of life leading to negative outcomes such as bad eating habits and not exercising causing bad life outcomes.
Chapter 4: Purpose
Purpose is necessary in life to ensure that we do not drift into worries, fear and petty thoughts. Making a purpose a focal of your thoughts will lead to a strengthened and deepened character. It is vital to turn obstacles into stepping stones and to have greater goals for the future. Having a purpose means to let go of fear and doubts which will only pull you back in your journey of life. It is better to have a goal and purpose that gives you focus then be full of jumbled thoughts and shifting sensations. This will give you strength and mastery of your mental powers.
Chapter 5: Success
The only way to rise is to elevate your thoughts. This involves setting goals, creating plans, and executing those plans. This also means to stop focusing entirely on yourself and more on others to better their life through service which in return betters your life. In general, those who give little in life, achieve little and those who give the most become the greatest. This is all achieved through purpose driven thought which is ultimately the path to success.
Chapter 6: Vision
By setting your mind to a vision, you will one day achieve it. Explorers set a vision of finding new worlds and they sailed to fin them. Cherish your visions and ideals to be a positive contributor to the world. It is better to aim high and dream big because through these dreams you will manifest the life that you want. Life expands to fit your vision. Your mind can outgrow your surroundings and change the environment which you are in no matter what your current circumstance you are in. Value important aspects of life such as family, education, and experience which will expand your life. Be someone who grows to inspire others to follow his example and improve their own lives. Do this by growing to embody your vision.
Chapter 7: Peace
In life people prefer an individual who is calm and peaceful who they can draw to and lean on them in times of trouble. This type of character is achieved through the right thinking. Peace of mind is more valuable than a lot of things in life as it allows you to enjoy the fruits of life. In the presence of this individual they provide comfort, encouragement and inspiration. All that you need is within you, awaken your powers.
Exercise Visualise your ideal life
This practical exercise involves applying the principles of As a Man Thinketh, by visualizing and describing your future life on a piece paper.
Imagine yourself 5 years from now living your ideal life.
Start by writing: ..... I am so happy and grateful, now that...... then write about your ideal life as if it is in the present tense.
Write about the main areas in your life such as:
- Romantic partner
- Work
- Home
- Finances
- Creative Expression
- Spiritual Connection
- Charity Work
- Family
- Travel
- Physical Habits & Health
This exercise has helped me in creating a clear vision for my life and hopefully it can do the same for you.
The vision that you hold in your mind, the ideal that you cherish in your heart - this you will build your life by, and this you will become.
