Preparing Intern Year

Preparing Intern Year

Hi Future Pharmacists!

I am doing a series of blog posts that may help guide you throughout your intern year in preparation for the pharmacy oral and written exam. As a recent pharmacy intern (last year), I believe that the information provided in this blog will benefit you through my personal experience.

The Intern Training Program Course I completed was the University of South Australia’s Graduate Certificate of Pharmacy. My overall grade was a distinction, which was due to an average mark in the courses written exam, which I have analysed/ practiced and can provide feedback on how to perform well in this test. I performed well in all the other areas of the course and was only held back by this mark for the written exam which prevented me from achieving a high distinction.

The main areas I will be discussing are below and will be divided into sections for separate blog posts which will occur every Sunday:

1. FLAGGING THE AMH & APF

2. PREPARATION FOR THE ORAL EXAM

  • Exam day strategy
  •  Structure sheet for the Primary Healthcare Section of the exam
  • Practice sheet (resource) used for the Primary Healthcare Section of the exam
  • Structure for the Legal and Ethical Practice section of the exam
  • Resources used to prepare for the legal and ethical section of the exam
  • Cheat sheet (problem solving sheet) for the prescription problem solving section of the oral exam (which you can take into the exam)
  • Resources used during the oral exam

3. PREPARATION FOR THE WRITTEN EXAM

  • Time management and exam day strategy
  • Documents I used with summary of the most important information that I noted form each document. Ex. understanding the pbs and Medicare
  • Sheets with calculation practice questions and answers
  • How to analyse and select the correct multiple-choice answers in the written exam

4. Post on performing a medication management review

5. Post on performing a MedsCheck/ Diabetes MedsCheck

6. Post on filling out an Extemporaneous product report

7. Practice exams to prepare for oral and written exam

8. Support with UNISA ELT tasks (refer to contacts page)

9. Support with provisional/ general registration

10. First Aid & CPR locations / providers

11. Other resources that relevant to pharmacy practice

Finally, I would like to state that this is my personal experience and in no way shape or form am I liable for your performance in the pharmacy exams you undertake. This information is only provided to give an insight into my personal experience which may benefit you in your intern year and should not form the complete basis for your study.

If you would like to contact me to discuss anything or if I may help you in any shape or form, please go to the contacts page.

Sincerely,

Yusri Kardo
